I have small, Miniature Jersey yearling bull that was straight backed as a weanling but now has a hump on his back, as a yearling.
A few years ago, I had a different (and unrelated) small Miniature Jersey bull calf with a straight back as a weanling, but developed a hump sometime over the winter into his yearling year, just the same as this latest calf has done.
This years hump back is my smallest bull and if I recall correctly, the other humpback was also my smallest bull that year.
On the first calf, I was told by someone that the hump was because of the bigger bulls "riding" him thru the winter and they hurt his back. This is quite possible, as I always put ALL my bulls (weanlings, yearlings, 2 & 3yr olds) together in one pasture throughout the year except when I'm using some for breeding (generally I do my breeding in June/July/August timeframe).
I did have this latest bull DNA tested NEGATIVE for the Dexter Bull Dog gene because of his smallness and his conformation made me "wonder". The first "hump backed" bull had excellent conformation and was one of my nicest looking bulls until the hump showed up and decreased his monetary value.
Does anyone know if this hump is caused by injury? Or what else might cause it?
Thank you.
If I can figure out how, I'll put a picture on here...If the pictured doesn't show up, someone please tell me how to put one on here. I went to imgur to get a URL for my picture but I couldn't see it show up on here. So then I found a place to "drag/drop" my picture but again, I can't see it show up on here...
