Ok so my greatest fear is that Josie js going to dry up a good 6 months before shes due to calve. She calved in April, we went to OAD soon as we felt we could I think around 3 months, out of necessity. We then were delayed getting her rebred cuz I couldn't keep a close eye on her. we did get her AIed on September 28th which would actually be the perfect time for a calf, end of June next year (I've got a LOT of cleanup and salvage work to do with my gardens next spring!). I didn't see her come into heat so I am PRAYING it took and it sticks.
With the timing of everything by the time I recover post partum by the end of December or something I feel like it's gonna be really hard or impossible to get her production back up or keep her producing at all, since shs already down to 2 gallons a day. I soooo miss milking and making stuff, I will be so so disappointed if when I'm finally feeling myself again that she will be dry 😭😭.
Sorry this was all a very long winded way to say I'm thinking in case she does dry up I do want a dairy animal!! I can't go 6 months without milk!! A cow isn't really an option for us cuz of the cost and plus we're raising Emmy to be a potential second milk cow. A goat is a potential but I don't much like goat milk and just don't have an interest in em, plus don't have a billy goat.
My true wish is to get a dairy sheep to add to our herd of Jacobs. I always wanted to add a dairy sheep, just not really this soon. But if we need a dairy animal why not?? Just one or two, as I would be happy just having drinking milk for the house, like even half a gallon a day(I know dairy sheep don't produce as much as goats).
Problem is I have never ever seen a dairy sheep for sale. At least not on Craigslist. I did call around one time out of curiosity and spoke with a few sheep dairies that are only an hour away from me near hayward, wi and they were happy to chat with me even tho I told em I wasn't ready just really into dairy sheep lol. They said they do sell lambs every once in a while, but really never grown ewes. So I figured I'd ask the sheep people on here if they know of another way to find dairy ewes in milk or at least pregnant and gonna be in milk soon? Does anyone on here ever sell any? Come February or something I'd travel to any surrounding state like Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota etc to pick one up lol.
TL:DR is the idea of me finding a dairy sheep in milk this late winter/early spring a total pipe dream? Anyone within a state or two of WI sell any? Like 1 or 2.
