A brief synopsis:
Della had mastitis last lactation...noticed because of salty milk and slow filtering. For whatever reason, treated all 4...honestly don't know why I didn't do indicator test for her at that time. Cleared up, milk good, production good.
Quit milking during cold 2 months but she had her 6 month old big boy on her so did not think anything about it.
Resumed milking at weaning with goal of beginning dry off. Discovered mastitis in both cows. One quarter in both. Treated with both holistic and eventually antibiotics recommended by vet. Started dry off as recommended by vet. Della seemed good. Discovered swelling in other cow at about 10 days; treated, good, freshened good.
Both freshened Easter weekend but Della had strings and slight thickness in the same quarter. Did holistic treatment(Synergy products), finally broke down and used Today to no avail...better but not perfect...still dark blue on indicator.
Then discovered fairly dark blue on another quarter. Finally did the whole collecting milk and sent samples from both cows...one for each quarter on Della; combined for Lola.
Lola clear.
Della has Staph A in both hind quarters...no symptoms except that darkness on test card
Pasteurella in the quarter I've been struggling with.
And, hurray, one is totally clear!
Got results on Saturday and antibiotic panel yesterday. Have messages into 2 vets. Crazy trying to get them to call back.
Sooo...the informative thread from March 2018(Staph A woes) has a lot of info.
Leaning towards trying the Spectramast LC(it is good for both conditions, supposedly) but the vet did get a text to me saying she only has the active ingredient of that product as injection. Will need to order intramammary. So that is my main question. Intramammary better than injection?
(Oh, Della is 8...I realize that is a thing)
I found my DSMO in the milk room. Also have oil of oregano and thyme oil in the Synergy products. I massaged that onto her udder a bit ago. She almost fell asleep in stanchion. LOL She was kind of snoring!
She has no outward symptoms of mastitis from staph quarters(but a bit salty), small amount of strings in the pasteurella quarter at stripping(2-3 tsps maybe) Out of curiosity, I did an indicator test this morning. Past. still dark blue, one Staph semi dark, other 2 quarters pretty normal. Didn't do California test today. Last time(2 weeks ago) the pasteurella quarter got kind of gelled...no other gelling.
Since I will need to wait for Spectramast if I go that route, shall I start giving the 10cc of DSMO now? I have all the tools needed to do that.
I do have 2 bums on Della so hoping that helps keep her milked through the day. I have separated her from Lola as of this morning cuz those dang bums will go with whoever...don't want them spreading it around. Luckily nothing showed up on Lola this morning on the indicator but will need to keep an eye on that.
FYI...both girls are relatively low producers...3 gal OAD for Della now and 2 from Lola if locking up babies through the night.
The reason we have bums(5 hanging around right now) is a whole other cow story in the beef herd that would make my brief synopsis even less brief!
