Marie had her calf yesterday but I had no idea. Yesterday morning I saw that Marie's pins were dropping just a little so when I let everyone out I sent Marie with them. She's 10 years old and never has a problem calving and it was a scorcher of a hot day. When you stand on the edge of the timber the breeze that comes out is always cool. I thought it would be better for Marie to have her calf in a cool spot of her choosing.
I called the cows in last night and everyone came in including Marie. She still looked fat and her pins were not gone, and there was no signs of blood on her and I thought there would be a calf by morning. DH woke me up shortly after sunrise and told m there was a calf out in the pasture all by itself! No one was bellering for a calf last night.
I went to see her and I could see Marie looking. I told DH that she must have calved and she knew where it was. I turned Marie out into the main large pasture. Marie started grazing. I went up to her and told her to find her calf. Well, that old girl put her nose to the ground and tracked down that calf like a Blood Hound after an escaped prisoner. She went up the hill slightly to the right, crested the hill and started down the other side when she mooed for her calf and I could hear the calf moo back. By the time I caught up with them the calf was headed straight for the milk bar and without hesitation latched on and had a big breakfast!
I got up to them because y"all know the question that needed answering, bull or heifer.? My luck it would tun out to be a bull. This calf is sired by the neighbors new black Angus bull not my bull. I walked right up to that nursing calf and had a look see from behind. There was girl parts with no dangling bits! IT'S A HEIFER!!! First calf this year and she comes with all the proper equipment. I'll get some pics later.
