I want to do broilers again this year, but I'm wondering if I should just order extra dual-purpose chicks (since we need layers anyway) or if I should go ahead and get the Cornish X. I was thinking about White Plymouth Rocks. Have any of you had luck with heritage meat breeds? It doesn't sound like it from what I'm reading here. Also, I'm planning to do meat turkeys, but the Broad Breasted varieties can't reproduce on their own and that rules them out for me. Have any of you butchered heritage turkeys and did they have a decent amount of meat?
Heritage turkeys need 12-18 months to reach a good size, and like the chickens, the breast is tender but everything else must be braised. They usually dress out around 12-15#.
You can breed your own broad breasted turkeys if you do AI.
