I brought an old, egg bound hen into the house Tuesday night. She has that classic head up, tail down, I’m about to lay an egg stance. Her abdomen was tight and painful. I gave her the standard epsom salt bath along with oil inside her vent, and placed her in an old stock tank on the porch.
Wednesday brought soaking her every few hours followed by the oil enema. She pooped a few times and her abdomen softened up a bit. She maintained the head up tail down stance. The poop looked normal half of the time and half of the time it was greasy. She started paying attention to her surroundings but made no attempt to leave the tank, which has no cover on it.
Thursday I quit soaking her but kept up with the oil enema. Her abdomen was softer still and she didn’t seem to mind having it massaged which I did a few times. Her posture started to flatten out a bit. There was lots of pooping. She was eating and drinking. She kept an eye on the comings and going’s but still stayed in the stock tank, making no attempt to fly out.
Friday she is eating and drinking and pooping pretty much like normal. Her posture is almost normal but not quite. She’s content to lay there, maybe walk around the tank a little and watch everyone come and go. She still has made no attempt to leave the tank, which makes me think she’s not right. I’ve never had a healthy hen just hang out in an uncovered pen like that unless she had chicks, and even then some pop out for a break now and then. I did one oil enema and massaged her belly which is a lot more pliable and not ouchy. She fights with me messing with her but doesn’t fly. There still is no egg and she doesn’t really act like she’s trying to lay one.
According to all the sites I’ve read about egg bound hens, she had 48 hours to pass the egg or die. She’s improving, so I’m not sure what to think. Do any of you have any ideas?
