I’ve got an 18 month old Boer doe, exposed but not confirmed bred at this time, with a funky spot.
She’s been a bit under the weather if you spy on her. More than normal laying flat out, less energy, quiet, subdued, just off for her. If you go over she hops up & seems/acts fine. No fever or anything, manure normal, eating well, ears good, no snotty nose, all things check out ok. So, I noticed a spot on her udder that was two angry red pinprick spots & some swelling (it was almost like an abscess type localized swelling not like pregnancy edema swelling). You could see remains of clear dishcharge on her hair there but not much else. She did NOT want me to touch it. Next day swelling is a bit more pronounced (larger ball not the area swelling), the spots are angrier looking & a bit oozy but minimal change to them in size. She flipped out when I cleaned it so I slathered on some neosporin, gentle iodine spray to area & waited until I could get some help to hold my jumping bean. Next day hair is gone in a 3ish inch circle, the two spots are still angry, the area has some clear signs of infection with a few pus-y spots under the skin, oozing clear discharge & it’s super tender. Almost looks like the flesh is being eaten a bit (like from the inside not ants or a predator if that makes sense) it’s pus-y/infection-y looking not gangrene-ish.
I know what I think it is I just want to make sure I’m not having tunnel vision & overlooking something because the swelling is a bit different than normal with my suspected thought.
Any thoughts? Any suggestions on treatment? It doesn’t appear to be an abscess trying to blow or anything like that. She is routinely disease tested in a very carefully managed group & everyone has always tested neg for everything. It isn’t mastitis-y mammary tissue isn’t involved.
