I lost a 3 year old doe on Thursday night
Tuesday mid afternoon she delivered 2 stillborn( gorgeously colored & perfect ) kids 2 weeks early. I check everyone over morning and evening and at morning check she was fine, I saw her at noon when i was refreshing hay and she was stuffing her face.
My best guess is she was rammed and it caused premature labor? This cold snap has everyone so darned grumpy.
By Wednesday morning she had passed some of her afterbirth but still had some hanging and looked crampy like but I didn't feel any kids( by belly feel not going in) and she wasn't pushing at all. She spent the day eating and resting and kind of " punky" I thought she may be mourning the loss of her babies as she was a good mother last year with her first kids.
Thursday morning she had passed the rest of the afterbirth but was standing alone in a corner. She didn't want to eat or drink when I offered. She wasn't acting like she hurt but was off. When I checked her at 10:30 she was laying on the hay bed ( normal position) while everyone else was soaking up the sun. At 2:00 she was in the same place and wanted nothing to do with grain or the 2nd cutting grass clover I snuck in for her. I knew then something was wrong.
I called the vets office and after explaining her situation they wanted me to come in for meds. I told them that I wanted her looked at and thankfully they gave in. The vet I prefer for my goats was out on a long/ detailed farm call, so the other one came after his last office call.
Her temp was 94 ( I had forgotten to bring my thermometer in and the cold snap got it) He pushed and prodded and determined no kids but when he pushed on her she screamed and it was not a good sound and she produced a rank discharge as well. I started to get a pen ready for her that I could get a heat lamp in and he said he would flush her and then give glycol and meds etc..
In the meantime she got up and was trying to hide and he ushered her over to where the pen would be to work on her and I went out to grab a couple birthing pen panels. Suddenly he calls out " I think she just died on me".
I went over and she had indeed just died right there. I wasn't surprised really because of how she was acting. I think he was though. He asked if we could cut her open and see if we could find a reason for her death and I was happy about that because I wanted to know as well.
She looked fine and as he was looking he said her uterus was already starting to tone up / shrink back ( is that right?) as it should and then as he examined it closer he finds a big hole where a hoof must have torn through . He said that was shocking especially since they were early , smaller and the hooves would be softer etc.. I guess not since it happened.
I didn't see the birth but didn't see any trauma that would indicate a difficult delivery. I did have to assist her last year as she just seemed to have lost her strength to get them out, so who knows?
She was one of the sweetest natured does I had. Never bullied or bothered anyone. Makes me sad.
At least I know it wasn't something I did or didn't do. I hope my kidding season is uneventful now.
