Ok KFC, I’m at work on my phone and mastitis is not something I know much about on a good day so I’m turning to you.
I haven’t seen the cows much the last month or so. Mom does the chores and sees them daily, I get a good look at them periodically in the daylight. A few weeks ago she said Acorn’s one front quarter looked a bit bigger. Acorn has been dry since September. We aren’t sure when she is due but it could have conceivably been her udder starting to build so we just watched it. It didn’t really get bigger. It never got red or swollen looking. It wasn’t hot. She’s never acted sick. But if you felt the quarter you could feel a hard mass.
Well Christmas and New Years hit and holiday lab hours and vet hours blah blah blah But I finally got a sample sent off to see on Jan 5. At that point there’s almost nothing even in the quarter. After stripping the teat we barely got enough for the test. The hard lump is much smaller than it was and to look at her udder you would never guess anything might be wrong.
All we were able to express was some brown, clearish fluid. It was dark but the strip shots looks whiter when they were shot towards the ground.
Got the results back today and it’s Pasteurella multocida. I don’t know many mastitis bacteria but that one I’ve definitely never heard of! Of course Google makes it sound absolutely horrible. Like... you find them dead or dying horrible.
But this has been going on for weeks so I’m going to assume it’s not acute. I haven’t taken her temp at all because nothing has ever looked like she isn’t feeling perfectly fine. She runs and jiggles and stuffs her face just like always.
Google also says this can be a hard case to treat intrammary. I also had a sensitivity done on the sample and that report says is sensitive to just about every drug so... 🤷♀️ Of course that could be when it’s causing respiratory issues and not so easily treated when it’s in the udder.
Either way I’m asking for tips/experience/stories/help with this one.
I’ll attach the report in another post later. I can’t log in to Tapatalk on my phone right now to post it.
