I can't figure out what's going on. We took Morgaine over to the neighbor's place to be bred, and she came into heat right on schedule, the bull bred her (her Estrotect patch was bright pink), and we brought her home a few days later. A couple weeks after that, we took Cricket over, she came into heat, her patch rubbed off, and we brought her home. Terrific, two cows bred! YAY!
Exactly 21 days after Morgaine was "bred," she came into heat and was jumping all over Cricket, and vice versa. So I guess it didn't take. You know, it happens, I know. We've always had good luck with live cover, and the only time someone missed was Bandit, many, many years ago. So we took Morgaine back to the bull (she's still there today), and yesterday, 23 days after Cricket was "bred," she started making goo. She's not ACTING like she's in heat, but there were a few frozen strands of goo on her tail yesterday when I went out to feed her and Oliver. If it wasn't so cold and frozen, I might not have even noticed them. Normally when she's in heat, she paces the fenceline, moos constantly, and tries to jump Oliver, and she's doing none of that, but those strands of goo bother me. They're clear, which I understand indicates heat goo, am I right? (I'll be holding my breath, watching for frozen blood tomorrow...)
How can BOTH cows be positively bred, and then come up empty like that? It's too late in the year to take Cricket back, so if she's NOT pregnant, I'm SOL for this year. And I'm hoping against hope that Morgaine was actually pregnant, and nothing will happen today (her scheduled heat date), but if she's not, I hope her patch is rubbed off tonight. Better safe than sorry.
So, my question is, how common (or uncommon) is it to show signs of heat in a recently bred cow? I've never really noticed it in my own girls before, but I remember hearing about it here and there here on KFC. I'm hoping it's common, and I'm fretting over nothing. You'll probably ask if it's the same bull, and it's the same one for Morgaine this time as Cricket had last month, but the original one Morgaine was with the first time was a different one. I am so puzzled!
