Ok someone local to me is selling a nice healthy doe for $200 or trade for hay. Now the 200 is plenty fair. I asked about the hay (they have gotten hay from us before ). Well they want 5 rounds. Locally round bales run anywhere from 45-75 depending on who you purchase from and the quality of the hay. We cut them a really cheap deal a few months ago on the tail end of last years hay as we needed to clear the hay barn out to put this years cut in. They paid $30 a bale delivered. I let them know at the time that the ONLY reason it was that price is needing to make space. Once again it was last years cut ,but was still really nice hay. I think I will just go with the cash as normally the bales we have currently would run $65 a bale (not delivered).
My husband's boss gives him a certain amount of the cut each year ( it's not a lot but it is a definite perk we love and appreciate) so it isn't exactly cash out of our pocket but at the same time it can be if I end up having to purchase additional hay. AM I just being a tight wad? The doe is 7 yrs old, no testing , 1/3 dairy 2/3 meat goat, history of regular dam raised twins every year. She has a nice udder. Built well but I am thinking the cash is the better option. Granted I am a hoarder when it comes to hay. We do not generally have hard winters around here but as soon as it hits a slight chill hay is going to be about 85 a round bale at most feed stores.
There hasn't been as much hay cut this year either. Where the boss lady usually gets 3-4 cuts she managed 2 this year. It has been the same across every hay person we know. A couple managed 3 but ended up with some loose bales from cutting too early. ( Rain has been a pain as far as timing goes).
We were initially just going to take the hit and do the hay until she wanted to point out the last bales they received were for 30 each. Part of me just feels like if I do the hay no one is going to be satisfied with the deal. Hmm I think I have made my decision if we should end up purchasing her. It will be with cash.
