Short of a bull, is there anything natural to help a cow to cycle? I used to give mare magic to the horses to calm them in their heat cycles, it was mainly raspberry leaves so I just got to thinking....
I have given Annabell two shots of lute, neither went well. The last one was bad enough that I probably won't give her another without a head lock. She broke one tie and I though it was going to be her halter next. I only got 1 nd 1/4 cc out of 2 cc's of lute in her. My hands just do not work like they used to. Which leads me to the next point, she is heavy and a big girl, about #1400. She is heavy from hay and next to no grain. The new hay is no where near as good so she is getting a bit more grain and seems to have lost a little bit if weight. She calved five weeks early at the end of March with her second calf which died. I have been milking her TOA until a few days ago and went to OAD, getting about 5quarts. If I grain her much she does go up a bit in production. I have never found her heat cycles easy to detect. She is not very noisey. Not sure if breeding issues are passed on, she is about the age her mother started having issues. I made the mistake of going a long time without trying to breed her mother, not knowing that does not work well in cows. Anyhoo, I think shots are out. I researched and could not find any information about anything given orally.
I had kind of made up my mind to beef her but I really hate to do so. She had been a real stinker for a few weeks but lately she has been back to her old self which is pretty good. She is a good mother and is very good about milking. I hate to give up. I suppose I could dry her off and send her off to someplace with a bull but that seems like that might have its own set of issues.
Oh, I had the AI guy out with her first lute shot as I thought she miiight be coming into heat. He felt around and said he thought she might be "getting toned". I think she may have been coming out of a heat. I have considered having the vet out and have her give the cow a shot but that can get expensive in a hurry.
