We raise some rare breed dairy cows and on rare occasion we sell a family milk cow to someone wanting their very own milk supply at their place!
We sold a cow to a lovely older lady that lives near Campo, CO and we truly believed that the cow was a good match for her new home. The cow was a third generation Dutch Belted cow that had calved for us twice and was pregnant with her third calf. We had milked her by hand and machine and had also let her raise a couple calves for us.
The cow was always very friendly and compliant and was what we considered the "sweetest" cow on the farm! She would come up to be petted and would often stand there with the humans to be touched, just because she wanted to be with us
Well that little cow just calved, a beautfiul red and white Dutch Belted bull calf and our sweetest cow has turned into a very resistant non-cooperative cow!
I'm trying to find someone that has some experience dealing with family milk cows to go help this wonderful lady who is struggling to get the cow to do what family milk cows are supposed to do! GIVE UP THEIR MILK!
The cow has NEVER kicked EVER since dancing around a bit when she freshened the very first time but she has had lots of milk shed experience since then....and she decided to KICK with purpose when her new owner tried to get milk......so there is something I'm missing.....We handle our heifers from their first day on earth and they are used to having humans touch ALL their girl parts, belly, legs, under their tail.....and more! This cow knows what she is supposed to do...
I live in east central Oklahoma so it's not an option to go visit to help get this little cow to be a good milk cow again and I'm really hoping to connect with someone that can help or I'm afraid that mastitis will settle in since the calf can only use about half what this cow produces.......the calf is nursing only the back teats and I really don't want to see a really nice cow develop mastitis.
Our friend with her resistant milk cow feels like she is all alone in her desire to provide fresh whole milk for herself and other families in need in her area. She is not strong enough to struggle with this cow to get past this issue so needs some help to figure out how to get compliance instead of resistance. I don't want the cow to get dumped because of this rough patch and that's what I'm afraid may be the final outcome here!
If you can help or pass along my information to someone that could help, please share. If you want to call or text, My cell number is 918-740-six 1 0 8.
I won't post the lady's contact information here but will certainly pass it along to someone who is willing to help in this Resistant Milk Cow situation!
Thanks in advance,
