We have a golden retriever puppy. She was born in December, and my 15-year-old daughter bought her. A number of years ago we had a border collie who was hit by a car, and my husband and I have held off on letting our daughter get another dog until she was old enough to take full responsibility for it.
The dog is sweet and lovely. However.
However. She will NOT quit biting! We even got advice from a professional trainer on methods to train her to stop, and we've been working hard, but she just won't quit. She absolutely terrorized my younger children (they are not tiny-- ages 6-13). She will get out and jump on and bite my younger ones until they are literally screaming in terror and running for the house, which only makes it worse. But it does hurt and her teeth scratch. She's obviously not meaning to hurt them, it's play nipping and not hard, but her teeth and claws are sharp and do scratch and hurt.
I'm beside myself. It's frustrating and discouraging. My 11-year-old tried to take her for a walk this afternoon and couldn't even get out of the driveway. He was in tears and she just kept biting him and jumping on him, even though he was doing all the things we're trying (hold still, telling her to sit, telling her no bite and holding her mouth closed). Anyway, I had to go out and put her back in the fenced yard and give up.
She does okay with my daughter, but there's still a lot of biting. I can tell she loves being around the kids and she's desperate to play with them, but at this point none of them (except my daughter) want anything to do with her.
I have no idea what to do. I looked into professional in-kennel training and it was $1600, which is too much. I'm not sure if obedience lessons with my daughter will help with this kind of problem? My dairy cow is easier to deal with!!
