Last night before bed Rocky was more antsy than normal to go outside to potty. Ok, he does that on occasion, so I didn’t think much of it.
Except as soon as he was out the door, a small poop fell out on the patio/sidewalk. Odd.
When I picked it up today it had already started to change to that kinda chalky look that raw food causes. Otherwise it looked normal.
But tonight he’s just being weird. He’s antsy, but almost acts like he does when he’s done something wrong but hasn’t gotten caught yet. (He hasn’t, he’s been with DH all day)
You know how dogs kind of hunch up a little when they come to you when they’re in trouble? He’s doing that, then sitting oddly. Goes from standing to laying down or sitting & vice-versa in fast, jerky movements, rather than his normal calm way.
I took him out to go potty, and followed him out with a flashlight, thinking maybe he’s going to have diarrhea or something. Nope, it almost is like he’s constipated... he tried to poop 3 times (because he’d quit trying & I kept making him go back & go), and finally got a tiny poop out. Normal size around, but only about 1/4 inch long.
The texture at first glance looked a bit like he’d eaten grass, so I got a stick & examined it a little closer. No grass in it. (Why do all of us on this forum tend to examine poop??? Lol)
Then he ran back to the house, and just before he reached the door he sat down oddly, like he was going to rub his butt on the ground, but he didn’t rub it. Just sat for 2 (maybe less) seconds & got up & ran to the door.
He’s been on a raw chicken diet for a couple months now, and about 2 weeks ago I added in a smallish chunk (maybe 2x2 square, on average) of liver from the heifer I had butchered. He’s gotten the liver probably 2-3 times a week with his drumstick for breakfast. No other food changes.
Thoughts?
simplynaturalfarm? I know your hubby is a vet, and you feed your dogs a raw meat diet, so I thought I’d ask you before talking to our vet on Monday. Not sure what he’ll say when I tell him about Rocky’s new diet, and I’d like your thoughts first.
Lannie? You have experience with dogs’ digestive troubles...
Someone else on here is a vet too, yes? Or is married to one? I can’t remember who it is right now, to tag them...
He has spent more time outside chewing on his fave stick the past several days, but that not uncommon this time of year. He likes doing that during chore time... and it’s never caused a problem before. Nothing else different that I can think of.
