So, after almost 3 years of being owned by a cow... it's time to pull up the big girl pants, and head off to work. Kids are ready for school this Fall, and we will be moving close to school and work, which means an apartment. I will have to sell my Jersey Gal, and I have had zero interest in any of the friends/family/homesteaders I have asked.
It's surprisingly hard to do this, I love that cow, and I love milking, caring for her, the surprises, the problem solving, the peace and comfort, pretty much everything there is about cow ownership. Even being tied to a lactating cow is okay with me. She and I transitioned through a lot together, and this cow is more than just a food source, she has been a neck to cry on, a pain in the neck, she gave me a sense of worth, and accomplishment, and the pride of being able to work with her and taking a completely wild, pregnant heifer and transitioning her into a relatively reliable milking cow. It's hard to put into words, but I know you all will understand.
I call her my midlife crisis cow, but she was more than that, I left an extremely abusive marriage, and without ever intending it, the ability to work with and care for her brought back my self esteem, my confidence, my belief in myself, my belief in others, and yeah.....
But the time is here that life changes again, and we have to change with it, and for me, that means going forwards and raising my little ones, and there is no other alternative for now than selling her. I cannot afford to dry her up, and put her on pasture, and I have no where to keep her anyways.
sigh.
Anyways -
How does one go about selling an unvaccinated, solely grassfed, Jersey? I will list her on this board, of course, and also contacting my local Weston A Price groups, but any ideas would be gratefully received.
Thank you
