My six year old Jersey had her calf this morning. Labored overnight in the barn apart from her herdmates which really seemed to upset her. Didn't eat hardly any hay through the night but drank plenty of water and had half a bucket soaked beet pulp after she calved.
Cleaned fine but fours hours after calving which is slow for her.
I usually keep her and her calves separated from the others after calving for a few days till the calf follows well but with outside access. I didn't have outside access available this morning so left them in the barn in a 24 by 24 loafing area newly enclosed (newly as in yesterday). She so likes her routines and hates changes ☹️.
Long story short since she was still refusing hay couple hours after calving I let her back out of the barn and just hung out with the pair most of the day. She went straight to the round bale, ate a few bites and went to graze what she could. Our grass is not that great yet but she seemed happy to be out and okay.
Milked her out this evening to give her some relief (she usually freshens around 6ish gallons a day and goes up from there). Offered more beet pulp and her grain and she barely ate a fourth of it. Still not much hay. Refused molasses water which she usually loves. Ate some diamond v yeast and about 4 pounds of plain rolled oats though. Was going to keep her in for the night but she wouldn't eat hay so I let her back out for some more grass which she will at least eat and a couple more mouthfuls of hay. Back in for the night offered remaining beet pulp which she nibbled.
Temp this afternoon- 102, temp at midnight check 101.4.
Vet coming tomorrow but anything to watch for until then? Or do?
If you got this far thanks.
Anything I am not checking or asking that I should be?
