After two failed trips to the auction to get a buck to breed our two nanny goats so we can milk them, last friday some friends called to say the auction was flooded with goats. Hubby heard about it and so went straight from work to the auction to try and find a buck. There must have been 30 goats there and not one was an intact buck and the auction was starting. Hubby asked our friends if any of the nanny's udders had looked good with decent sized teats and bid on the one they suggested and bought it. The next goat into the ring had lovely large teats too so he bid on her too.
So long story short I now have two in milk nanny goats. Each with a baby nursing from it. Both nannies are healthy and happy and we have seen the babies nursing on both the different nannies without trouble. We have been checking their udders two or three times a day checking for any signa of mastitis and milking off any extra milk and feeding it to the pig. We werent fully emptying the udders the first two days though because we didn't want the babies to be shorted. We did make sure that the udders never became overly full. Yesterday we milked them right out and managed to save the milk from one of them. The other stepped in the container. This morning I went to taste the milk and it was very salty which I know can happen if it sits too long in the udder. How many times a day should we be milking them so that their udder goes right empty to keep the milk from getting salty tasting? We dont want to start separating the babies from them over night yet because it is very cold here still and everyone is still settling in and the babies are still very young. A week or two weeks old. There is still dried umbilical cord hanging from their bellies. Hubby still hasnt built a head gate so it is hard for me to milk them by myself but Hubby can strip them out totally in five minutes flat so he can do it before and after work and that takes care of twice a day until we get the head gate built. Should we be milking them out more often then that?
