Today was our local fair. My daughter showed some calves. It was very cold and snowing lightly. We did not wash our calves. Everyone else washed their calves. It was in the low 20's. I just couldn't subject my babies to freezing them when it would not have made a difference in the outcome. My daughter just brushed them and blew them with the dryer. The beefmaster heifer is 2 this month. I did not expect to take her as she is going to calve any day. They were trying to hurry along so the judge didn't talk much about the cattle. He didn't even ask anything. I wonder if he could tell she was ready to pop. She has a fairly full udder. Her vulva is puffy, very long, and bounced with every step. She won her class. The shorthorn plus won her class. They both looked thin in the grand class because those other heifer were stuffed to the point they look unreal. The winner was a purebred shorthorn that was so beautiful. I really wish I owned her. Our prospect steer was walking slow as Thursday night the vet removed his testicles. We are going to cook them tomorrow. They are in the fridge. He won grand prospect steer but only because he was the only prospect steer. The big steers looked amazing. He looked like a toy next to them. The kids all had a great time. So many nice families were showing. I like how everyone was so encouraging to each other. I also came to realize that I am one of them. I knew almost everyone at the show. It does feel good to belong rather than being an outsider. Overall it was a good day other than freezing. Many families here raise cattle. We are the only ones that show calves we raise. Every one else buys theirs. I am actually not every expecting to win so it is awesome when we do. I wish I could get others to go pick a nice calf out of their pasture, work with it, try showing. The experience is great. So many people say they won't try because they can't win. When did kids stop trying? No chance to win if you don't even try.
