My Jersey Zebu cross mini cow , Kiki, is acting weird and suddenly going bald. She looked fine last week and this week I noticed big clumps of hair missing, with no crusting or redness. This is mostly on the sides of her neck. The two cows housed with her are fine, and none have the crest of the neck going bald lice related hair loss. So today I thought well, maybe its lice and powdered all three of them. I was powdering all three while they were eating and then Kiki's flanks started pulling in and out in a weird way. She continued to eat and struggle with the other two cows in a perfectly normal way. My first thought, "is this quickening"? It looked like a calf strongly hiccuping inside her. It was very deep inward movements looking a little squirmy. Keep in mind she is a short cow and I'm standing over her looking down at her back. I really don't think she has lice, as I've seen that before. This is a really bad time of year for a cow to go bald, please help me figure this out. I have also never seen this very strong contraction like squirmy thing going on with any cow. It went on for some time but I was working and couldn't watch for too long, just long enough to believe it's not normal. I'm not even sure if she's bred and need to check when I got her as I have not exposed her to a bull or anything. The only thing I've noticed a little different is her appetite has picked up in the last two weeks. She has horse quality hay at all times and gets a feed designed for growing cows on range, plus whatever I feel like adding (cracked corn, beet pulp) when I make her mix.
