Some of you may remember me posting about our issues with a local meat processor last year.
We now have a steer ready to go to freezer camp, so I contacted another (less) local processor whose website says they do private processing. In the email, I asked the following questions ...
Are you able to accept our steer for processing, and if so, when would be the first available time?
Do your prices include GST?
Does the $1.20/kg apply to the live weight, hot hanging carcass weight, or the amount of meat we receive?
Approximately how many kgs are the bulk packages?
Are we able to choose the cuts?
What happens to the hide of the animal?
Do you guarantee that we will receive all of our meat, and that all meat we receive is from our animal?
The minimum hanging time is 7 days - what is the average time from slaughter to the meat being available? ie does the hanging time for private processing often get extended due to the volume of other orders?
We would require all offal and bones for our dogs.
I received a response saying, 'Based on your questions we are not the right fit to process your steer.' Not they were too busy or no longer did private processing, but basically, they won't accept my steer because of the questions I asked.
He went on to say, 'I must say I take offence in the questioning of do you get all the meat back and is it from your animal. We take pride in our reputation of being a credible, professional business.'
I thought my questions were reasonable. Is it wrong to ask for a guarantee that they perform the service I am expecting? Maybe he's tired of being attacked by vegans, but if that is the case, I would have thought my questions were mild compared with the vitriol often dished out by militant vegans.
I guess we continue looking for a processor ...
