After all the good advice I received in my thread German Shepherd or Blue Heeler, I have been patiently waiting for the weather to warm up so I can get a GSD puppy. Then last night I found this Pyr x Anatolian mix on CL this dog on Craigslist and he has peaked my interest. I like that he's already 8 months old so a lot of the puppy stage is past and he'd be old enough to help keep predators away this spring. I also like that he doesn't have a history of chasing chickens (according to the seller).
He's an hour and a half away so it's not a trip I'll make unless I think he is likely to be a good fit so I'm back here seeking input from my trusted advisers.
Here's the sellers answers to some of my questions from an email:
How many acres is your place? 5.6 acres, about one third fenced, but it is not dog proof by any means.
How much does he wander? I don't know for sure. They like to go across the road to investigate where the neighbor took out a tree line. No house or animals there. The neighborwhere they went, and I found them, said they had never seen them there before. Our closer neighbor would tell me if they say our dogs because we communicate about things like that.
(How far away is your neighbor that he visited?) Neighbor with chickens is about a mile east of us. I had had them out all day and night for at least a month before they did that.
The day they took off, I was 20 minutes late with feeding them. They had to have been at the neighbor at least 2-3 hours before I found them. They ate the chicken feed
and then laid down to guard the chickens. No chickens were bothered.
The breeder said her dogs never roamed but she lost the father of the puppies while she was in the hospital.
She thinks someone stole him.
Since visiting the neighbor, they have been in a 12'x12' kennel 24/7. We only let them out if we are in the yard or go outside every 15-20 minutes to check on them.
Has he had any vaccinations? Yes, two shots of DHPP, at 12 and 16 weeks. Rabies at 27 weeks. I have tags for that. They would be due again Dec 2018.
What do you all think? Worth a try? Or likely a problem dog?
