I read the thread title and thought, "Oh no!" So very sad to read about the news of her passing. It's a blessing she did not need to suffer with this disease.
You said thread drift was okay....hopefully, it's okay to state my feeling on the subject....I don't understand why a blind eye was turned when this disease started really being made known many decades ago. Instead, I believe the powers that be viewed cows as a replaceable commodity and viewed BLV as managble. And the lack of universal precautions when it comes to animal/cow husbandry.....do people not worry? Are they not concerned? The rate of BLV is growing and unless vets, dairies, beef producers, the individuals who have one cow, and right down to the consumers buying the meat and dairy products start to in mass to say, we need to get a hand on this disease and try to eradicate it, it will most likely only be getting worse. And if flies spread it....Dear Lord, please help us and protect some stock....
From a recent study from 2015.... "In US dairies, BLV is virtually everywhere. Studies showed that at least 89% of all US dairies have infected cows, with an even higher percentage in the Southeast.1 On an individual cow level, approximately half of all US dairy cows are infected with the virus."
HALF!! It's feels like we have gotten to the top of the hill and are slipping down the other side in the mud at rapid speed with no signs of stopping until we reach the bottom with a THUD! And how does a country, a dairy industry crawl out of that hole when all or close to all it's stock is diseased....I suspect they will continue to still wallow there and not care or will say, how did this happen?, we didn't see this coming, what do we do, what do we do....
