We have found in the past that colony raising has not worked well with our American Chinchilla rabbits. As such we have them in basically wood/wire hutches. These are about 3ft deep and 2 ft wide with a stationary nest box on the back with a liftable lid. The cages have worked well in every way but a couple. Disinfecting is a royal pain and they are extremely heavy pens. We are leaning towards either building all wire cages or purchasing stackable units. With the size of our rabbits the price on premades seems a bit prohibitive.
I worry after readinv most of the info on the cages that our current ones are too small. I would appreciate input from all of you in regards to cage size.
We are wanting to expand our rabbits however if I cannot sterilize the pens better and be able to actually move them myself I am hesitant to do so.
During the spring months we sell a very large number of rabbits to a local feed store. Last year we were unable to keep up with the demand. (Ok for me a very large number is in excess of 30/month). This went on from early February through June (too hot to breed or sell).
It surprised not only us but the feed store owner as well. The kits we took her are all super socialized so when people come through the babies are looking for attention. In the past she has only sold dwarf type varieties. Last year she decided to try our large rabbits and point blank they would sell out within 2 days of delivery.
We have additional individuals asking about bulk baby purchases this year. We do not breed for show but we do breed for growth, litter size, temperament and overall rigor.
We literally had none left in the growout pens. I do not want to overtax our girls so I am wanting to increase our rabbit numbers.
Sanitation is a concern for me. Currently dropping/urine hit the ground and are raked out/moved to fill in dips on the property.Shavings are under the pens to absorb urine.
Right now the rabbits are in a sunny area. Since we moved recently we are no longer on the 5 acres and instead are working with a half acre for the next year.Long story. Anyway advice is greatly appreciated. Hoping to go to trays under the cages to make it easier to clean feces.
