Ugh! 3 years in, with Tallulah having been open and cycling that whole time, and only now, JUST when I have found the perfect little dexter to breed her to, she gets into the neighbour's paddock!
This morning she wasn't around to be milked but MacLeod was. I thought it was a little unusual, but then she and MacLeod aren't best buddies and sometimes she stays asleep while he wanders off. I find it a little suspicious when a "neighbour's" little light brown cow looks up when I call her name, so I go and take a closer look and... lo and behold, it is Tallulah, with half the neighbour's cows huddled around her and worst of all, the BULL jumping her!
It was the worst day too because I had to go out straight after milking... or, not-milking - and only got back after dark. I tried to call her over but she was too distracted, and there's no way I was going to get between her and the bull. I will try again tomorrow and see if she is in her right mind yet.
I have been watching her each day to see when she comes in heat so I could start recording it for the impending dexter date. This is the first time she's cycled since Ginger was sold. My theory is she escaped this time because usually she and Ginger would be busy jumping each other and that kept her distracted enough. However, with only MacLeod around, I guess she was looking for a little more action...
If the neighbours are home tomorrow I will see about getting more details on the bull. All I know is that's he's a beefer, a droughtmaster I think. I'm also going to call the vet and ask if he can lute her and how much that costs. Interestingly, all of the cows in with the bull are Tallulah's size, sometimes even smaller. They even have a lowline and what looks like a young jersey x holstein heifer. So possibly the bull has very low birthweight calves?
I'm very very annoyed at Tallulah. I hope she feels sufficiently uncomfortable as punishment tomorrow after 32 hours of milk in that little udder
