I have a friend who told me about a Jersey cow for sale. I went yesterday to look at her. Something just isn't setting right and I desperately need everyone's input here on weather to buy said cow, or run don't stop away from cow. She is a 4 year old small sized "purebred Jersey". She had a calf at 2 years old. They had her mother also. They sold the mother & kept her. Not a large producer which wouldn't matter to me. They don't keep a bull so they haven't bred her back. My friend said that a neighbors bull jumped in with her & they thought she was bred. Turns out she didn't settle. These people told me she has not been around a bull. There is issue #1. Then he said she gave 1/2 gallon am milking & 1/2 gallon pm milking at 2 with her only calf. She said that she just didn't know much about milking & she just didn't milk her out all the way. They were milking her momma who was a good producer. They know how to milk. Ok I get different stories and my friend tells me other things. The cow looks healthy & had a clean rear so no scours. Her eyes are bright & she is in good condition. Not overly fat. They don't grain her. Coat is in good shape & feet are fantastic. Top line is straight no hump back. She is not halter broke & will need lots of training. That doesn't bother me as I am pretty good at training them.
They wanted 1400.00 for her. I told them it is way too much I couldn't justify that much on a cow that might not settle & is such a low producer. I went shopping instead of buying a cow. They wanted to wait & see if they could get more from their add. He called at 9 o'clock last night to offer her for 1200.00. He claimed someone from farther away offered them that just from the add.(not believing them). Told him no I won't pay that much. I have not given them an offer.
This morning his wife calls & offers to let me have her for 1000.00 if I get her by tomorrow. Just because I seem to really like animals. What the heck! I don't want to pay 1000.00 for a cow that might end up in our freezer.
So do I decline her all together? I thought of offering them 500.00 and when she calves they can have the calf in stead of more money. If she doesn't settle then they get no more money. She will at that point just be beef for the freezer. I NEED HELP! What would you do???
Thank you in advance for your help!
Sue
