This is a bit of a rant, so feel free to bail now!
I do not know any other dairy cow owners in my area... well that isn't entirely true, I know a few but I don't really talk to them much. I have some closer friends who are beef cow people. Every. Single. Time. a conversation comes up about my cows I am lectured about how I am doing it wrong. When they saw my Maggie walking through the field, I was told she was dehydrated because you could see the triangle area under her shortribs and how that should be filled in. I pointed out that this was a dairy cow and they don't look like the beefers this person raises.
I stupidly mentioned that I have a bull calf coming in May. I get lectured about how I have to cut him. I recant that I am getting him for the sole purpose of breeding my cow then off to freezer camp he shall go by the time he is a year. This person wrinkled up their nose at me! As if that is wrong!
I've been lectured about how much I feed... because no cow ever should receive more than 8lb of anything in a day.... doesn't that depend on the cow and its individual needs? Maggie doesn't get 8lb a day, but even if she did... why are they always comparing dairy to beef? Its annoying. Really annoying.
I was even criticized because I want the vet to come and de-horn my heifer calf rather than using someone who I don't know who happens to know how to dehorn. I realize it may say money now... but every single goat I have ever had that was de-horned was done wrong and I always had to trim horns that grew weird. They are my cows, they are happy, they are healthy... so what is the problem?
