About 2 years ago I had a shockingly bad experience with a mouse running over my bare foot while I was doing dishes. Mice are gross but not scary or creepy unless I'm in my nightie and barefoot. Then they are terrifying I went out that same afternoon and brought home 3 month feral rescue kitten. For $35 she had her shots and had been spayed. I kept her in a giant dog crate for over a month and took her out several times a day, wrapped in a towel, to snuggle and get used to people. This was my very first house cat. She became an awesome house cat, draping across the back of my neck in the evening while I read, playing with DS#2, tormenting the dogs, and best thing ever, I never saw another mouse in the house after getting her.
We had family staying with us over the holidays and she freaked out and disappeared into my room. I came home fairly late one evening and the front door was open a bit. My cat was gone. She must have reverted to her feral life as we have seen her several times almost a mile away in the middle of the woods. I have spent months trying to get her back but without any luck. I feel so bad and responsible for losing her. It makes me sick with guilt when I think of what she must be going through in the woods. I have shed more tears than I care to admit over this little cat and had no plans to get another . . . until today. I saw a mouse in my kitchen drawer.
What would you guys do? I never thought I'd like a house cat as I'm not really a cat person but I loved this little cat. I won't set out poison with three kids, plus I almost lost my best ever dog to rat poison and never want to go through that again. Is another cat my best bet. I do have traps everywhere, both traditional and sticky pads.
