Well yesterday I had a beautiful paint mare delivered to my home. She came from a good home. She came at no initial charge for one reason. She killed her pasture mate. Not on purpose. From what I understand it was a matter of two dominant style mares. The other one was elderly. Apparently my girl kicked the other in her stomach and she died from internal problems.
My girl has some surface wounds but is otherwise fine. The previous owner loves this mare but it was a matter of she had to go asap or be put down. If I had other horses they would not have let me have her. Other than that she seems to be an awesome horse.
The real irony is last week I sold off every scrap of horse gear I had on the place except 2 lead ropes.I had planned to start leasing a horse this weekend but my car decided it wanted the money more.
Well fixed the car and I saw this post about my new girl.I didn't have a pen for her initially. However we had just purchased fencing materials.
Yesterday morning my Hubby slapped together a temp pen. She got here by 3.
She has stood staring at the road looking for her previous owner since he left. She is people oriented but a bit shy at the same time.
It's kind of weird for me.I have always gotten horses who were eager to leave their old home. She is eating and drinking but after she goes to stand watch. I know in a few days that will settle down. I do feel sorry for her though. I could see in this man's face that he loves this girl. She came from a great home but was in a bad pickle.
Now she is here. Her name is Star but I will most likely change it. Sometimes a complete change can be for the best. I am currently debating between naming her Faith or Grace. I know it will be one or the other.
My husband was livid with me for agreeing to take her sight unseen. Even more so when I told him what little I knew. Then he saw her leg and his face was even more grim. It's an ugly wound but purely surface. She scraped the skin, hair and all off of one spot. It looks worse than it is. She has had full vet care and is utd on everything.
Now after meeting the horse and knowing the situation my husband hugged me and said "I love you. You're crazy with a soft heart but I wouldn't have you any other way.You did the right thing. She seems like a good mare."
My son pointed out that the colt we sold was Headshot and that this mare would have had just that had she not come to us.I feel like I have been truly blessed to have her.
She is people oriented the way my old girl was but different enough that they don't really compare to each other.
In fact I actually have Ms.Piggy to thank. I have several spots where folks kept up with her story and that's part of why Faith/Grace was entrusted to me.
My daughter watched her being unloaded and was near tears. She saw the man hug Grace/Faith the way I used to do with Piggy and was like don't worry she will still be loved. My boys who had griped about slamming a pen together ina ddrizzling rain were sitting their with grins on their faces. Ironically enough my younger son was like " So mom when will you be teaching me to ride?".
Aside from Holley none of my kids have ever wanted anything to do with horses.
My oldest son told me it feels right. That it hasn't been the same without Ms.Piggy and Headshot greeting them as they get off the bus.
Now I am back to writing another page in my book of horses. I seem to have written a whole chapter in this one post.I know I am sappy but I figured you all would understand.
I guess I should tell you a bit on what my girl is. She is an 8yr old bay/tobiano registered paint mare. Slightly club footed. She is in very good condition overall and an easy keeper. I need to transfer her papers. The papers are just that..papers but it gives a record of her.
Now, time for me to get off my hindend. I have a heap to get done. I also have a halter to purchase. Looking forward to a grooming session today.
