Debbie, Do you soak your beet pulp and barley before you add to corn chops? I'm not sure what a corn chop is, but we made some small batch kafir corn silage that might be similar. We just finished with the last milking and Margo is drying off .....finally! We are planning to just feed her soaked beet pulp about 4 lbs along with her mix of grass and wheat hay for the next few days until we can tell her milk is gone. Like Isabella's cow, ours is about a 2 and we are eager to get back to feeding her better. We bought the BOSS and were wondering when to add them to the mix. Thanks again to all for all the information.
Abbie
My 2 cows are very typical dairy in structure and do NOT do well on just grass/hay. The yearling heifer, however, is half angus and fat as a pig on hay alone. I am going to have to separate her from the 2 cows because she does not need the extra calories and I am wanting to breed her next month.
I know that many here do not like the idea of feeding grain of any kind (especially GMO) and I am no fan of GMO either, but my cows need grain to be healthy. I do know there is non-GMO beet and corn available, but I simply cannot afford it. Best case scenario for the future is for one on my beef/dairy heifers will do well on just grass and I can say bye-bye to the grains. Meantime, I will continue to care for Sophie and Abbey in the best way I can.
It is my understanding that barley is still mostly non-GMO....?? Anyone know for sure?
