Has anyone dealt with acorn poisoning and, if so, were you able to successfully pull your cow through it? I've read several articles written by universities that essentially state that once they're down they seldom survive and if the do they don't do well. My parents have two cows down with what we believe are acorn poisoning. The vet can't seem to confirm it, but then they can't confirm anything at this point. Well, the vet said the cows were hypoglycemic but suggests only to feed alfalfa, which this cow is refusing to eat. Their symptoms match very well with acorn poisoning and since they're in a pasture with oak trees (all our pastures have oaks) that's the only thing that makes sense. None of the other cows have been affected, but none of them are as heavily bred as these two either.
Anyway, any help or advice would be appreciated. They've lost one cow/calf and another is down. They're trying to keep from losing her but have said they need to know more. At this point they have to make a decision on whether to put her out of her misery or decide if there's a chance and giving it to her.
TIA,
Kristi
PS. At this point she's not able to get up but is on her brisket. She's eating and drinking, pooping and peeing. Up until yesterday she's obviously not been "right" but was able to get up and down. Yesterday they got her up but couldn't today. She is upright on her brisket and seems alert. She was given a calcium drench. She refuses all alfalfa and molasses and minerals.
