Pmub is a 8 month old Jersey heifer. She started acting a bit off yesterday and she has gotten worse today.
Yesterday she seemed to be spending a lot more time sleeping, either in the sun or in her house. She wasn't really interested in any food: pasture, orchard grass hay or alfalfa. She would kind of nibble at it but mostly just gum a few pieces then let it drop out of her mouth. I did see her drink twice though yesterday. I did give her her weekly worming herbal formula and she liked that, although she didn't have quite as much excitement about it as the week before. It's a blend of herbs that I then mix with soaked alfalfa pellets and dried molasses.
Today when I woke up I looked out the window at her and she was standing still as a statue staring at the ground. I quickly went out to her to have a look. She walked over to the gate and was staring up at me expecting me to do something. I decided to mix up some alfalfa pellets and molasses and also cut up some orchard grass into the mix and give it to her in a similar fashion as her wormer. She liked everything but the orchard grass and did a pretty good job of avoiding it. When I was out in the pasture with the bucket of food for her she was acting very normal and walking around me in circles rubbing herself against my legs. I did notice that she ate the small flake of alfalfa that I gave her last night.
Yesterday I did let her walk just outside her gate because there's ok grass there that's still green (fairly new growth for the most part) and she did eat that but more slowly than usual. I didn't let her eat much of it. When I put kelp or salt in front of her she will eat/lick both of them. I don't let her get a lot because I don't know if it would do more harm than good at this point. She has no free choice minerals or salt normally.
I have been advised by a knowledgeable friend to give her a 60ml shot of vitamin C to her muscle and I plan to do that later today if I can find some.
She did start acting funny shortly after I fenced off a bit of new pasture for her. It's mostly old growth, gone to seed but there is some green stuff in there as well as some fresh stuff. I watched what she was eating in there and it was mainly the new growth that she liked. As soon as I noticed her acting funny I put her back on her normal pasture. I did walk the new area before letting her onto it and pulled out anything that I didn't recognize. I don't really know what I'm looking at though.
I'm thinking she just needs some roughage but I'm not sure what to do since she's not interested in eating.
What should I do? Should I call a vet or is this probably something that will pass?
