We have been raising some sheep and lambs on our property since August. By the time they got to our pastures, the lambs had the scours. I thought it was from stress from the ride here, which was like 7 hours. Then they continued to have the scours, and we thought it might be from the lush pastures. Where they came from, there wasn't much pasture.
They continued, so we treated with Corid, and didn't see any change. The vet came out to check on our cow, who has been having issues, she is in a totally different pasture, and she ended up doing a fecal on the lambs. The test came back positive for a nematode parasites, which we treated with Valbazen. They also tested for coccidiosis, so we treated with another 5 day in their water trough treatment.
I have lost about 10 lambs and the symptoms I first noticed was anemia by looking at eye lids and gums. Then some of them had the scours, which they lost weight once they had this. Some of their manure was in clumps and not runny. They would go off by themselves and lay around a lot more than the rest of the flock. They didn't seem like they had enough energy to keep up with everyone else. They weren't grazing as well and drinking as much, compared to the well ones. Then one by one, they would get to the point that their neck would curve at an odd angle and it wouldn't go back straight. Soon after that, they passed.
No matter what I did, which included, electrolytes, Vit. B Complex, probiotics, Scour Check, Valbazen, Corid, Slippery Elm, and Activated Charcoal, nothing seemed to be able to stop them from dying.
We are new to sheep, and tried rotational grazing with them, but they wouldn't respect the wires, so the pasture they are in, is plentiful with grass, but I would like to move them out of there, since it is infected, and could be keeping them sick. We have already moved them once, and am trying to get up another pasture for them.
I am just about open to anything right now, even though I was trying to do things the natural way at first with rotational grazing, we just couldn't keep them in the paddocks. I don't want to lose anymore, and from the looks of it lately, there might be some more that won't make it.
I could definitely use suggestions soon. Thanks,
