I've got 2 cows and a young (15 month old) bull who all have scaly patches of hair loss around their eyes, and now I see patches appearing on their necks and shoulders. I'll try to get some photos posted later, but I did a little research, and it looks just like photos of ringworm. However, all the information I've seen about ringworm says it's most likely to appear in young animals in Winter. We are definitely not having any Winter-like weather here (Western Oregon) right now, and the two cows are 3 and 4 years old. I also have a 2 month old calf with these animals, and he does not have these symptoms, but he has had weepy eyes.
The flies have been pretty bad, and all the cattle have had weepy and "gunky" eyes, which I've treated by wiping with a clean damp cloth. The eyes themselves do not appear cloudy, and I thought perhaps they were just rubbing against things to get the flies away, and rubbing the hair off, but I'm just not sure.
I use an herbal fly repellent and wipe them down, paying particular attention to the face. They are not always cooperative with this treatment, but I do the best I can. I also have fly masks for them, but the young bull must have caught his on something and ripped it, because I found it on the ground in the pasture and the strap part was torn off.
I have another cow and a heifer that recently returned from a visit to a bull on another farm, and I'm keeping them away from our bull until I know that they've been bred. The flies at the farm where they were visiting were much worse than they are here, but those two girls do not have the hair loss around the eyes.
Anyone have any ideas and/or suggestions? I will get some photos of them posted here as soon as I can.
