I've recently began looking around the forums/site here and there is so much advice I would like to say Thank you in advance and I have not had a chance to complete my profile yet but I am in Northern NY.
Down to the subject, I have a 3 week old (guess? He's not much more bought at auction as drop calf 3 weeks ago) Clover (son named) Started out great, a little stiff walking at first but the first day or 2 here he was in box stall with another calf bought at same time which believe they both came from same farm. About the 3rd day here went out in the morning and his left knee looked a little scraped up. Just assumed the other calf (both bulls) got a little feisty so I separated them cleaned clovers knee with betadine and went on with things....From that point on he got very listless by the end of the first week just about a goner not wanting to eat I mixed raw egg with power drench and using a syringe gave him that about 4x a day for a day and a half. I had also started him on penicillian 4cc. Really not thinking he was going to make it within 2 days he was a complete turn around getting up himself (i had be lifting him up) and appetite back. Knee still nasty looking started slathering on drawing salve and wrapping, finally after a few days started looking like pus draining out, on closer inspection appeared to be a hole there and a little pressure on the knee all kinds of pus came out and kept coming out...that has been his knee for the past week. cleaning 2x a day and still putting salve on still wrapping and still draining pus Also still on Pen 5cc 2x day upped 2 days ago from 1x day. He has not put weight on it he hops around and does get himself up with just the one front leg. i have been moving it and massaging it but I am kind of getting to my wits end with the drainage. We have raised a lot of calves and never encountered this before. Any ideas from anyone would be greatly appreciated!! Honestly he is my sons calf, But he was a $6 drop calf, I don't go into this with high expectations sometimes but this guy was just about gone 2 weeks ago, He's got the will I guess if I can just get the knee cleared up i don't know....
