We got 4 baby calves from a dealer. 2 bottle calves and 2 weaned. The two bottle calves died. My friend had them and the one weaned one, which they gave to me to try to save. The calf arrived, alert and bright, but also dripping watery, bloody diarrhea and with pinkeye and a cough. She had almost no appetite but would take a bottle, so I gave her Corid in a bottle and also bottles of electrolytes. Her diarrhea and appetite improved but the cough is sounding a little worse. I had gotten medicated feed with antibiotics in it but her appetite was so low she wasn't eating it. I bought some to dissolve in water, thinking I can give it to her in the bottle because she finishes whatever is in the bottle but was waffling because the cough was sounding better (infrequent and not too bothersome) but this morning her breathing sounded wet and rattely. I'm at the end of the 5 days I'm supposed to be giving her the Corid, so I'm thinking I should switch to the soluble antibiotics and give them to her in the bottle instead and hope it finishes off the diarrhea (it's like pudding now) and the cough.
Any advice is really welcome! Just today the calf started finishing her morning and evening calf starter (dry feed) and showing much interest in hay and grazing. I really want to pull her through, she's gorgeous and sweet and belongs to a good friend!
Problem: my favorite cow is due to calve any time now. I do NOT want anything getting into the pasture that could make the herd, and especially her new baby sick!!!! So how long do I keep this baby separated/quarantined? I know I need to keep her out until she finished the course of antibiotics, just because it will be really hard to get her separated to dose her if she's among them (greedy pig-cows!). But I do anticipate her health improving much more rapidly when she has access to full grazing and the company of the herd - the other weaned calf (mine) is thriving with the herd and seems so much better than when I brought him home (he was just a little thin, with old pinkeye scars).
