Well after two months of anticipation he finally came!(unknown breeding date) Checked at five thirty and she had two feet and a nose, I waited half an hour with no obvious progression and since I didn't know how long she had been in labor I grabbed a rope to give one tug, as I walked in she lay down and the head popped out and she got up and calf on the ground. 6:00 am a bull calf with no obvious complications yet. She licked him dry and he was up in 10 minutes? or so. He still hasn't got the nursing thing down but I showed him how to get there and after the last check a few minutes ago he was determined. I forgot the calcium stuff. I went back inside and had to lay down or faint, then fell asleep. I don't sleep well this late in my own pregnancy. When I woke up it was ten o'clock and she was passing the placenta. Looked to be all there. Got the hubby up (he works really late) and he couldn't figure it out. Finally he give me a funny look and bends over to look at the extra set of legs. He grabbed the camera and got a few pictures for me. After she ate the placenta I turned them out to the lawn to get him out of the mud and on solid ground to use those legs. Blasted mud. It rained and flooded her pen and its the only one I got. I'm afraid to put the calf in with the horses, they were fine with Momma but I don't trust my gelding with baby. I'm extending her current pen with electric fence but its not up and running yet, maybe in a day or two. She got some molasses water and drank a little. Should I still give her the calcium stuff or am I past the initial worry of milk fever? or save it incase she has an episode later on? She does not like the chickens anymore, chases them away, thankfully she just wanders away from me with baby instead of chasing me. I was worried about her being super protective, and me being prego would not be a good combo. The bull is supposed to be a jersey long horn cross. I was checking for horn buds and was there any doubt with longhorn in the mix? When do I disbud? When and what kind of vaccines do I need to get him if he is going to be next years dinner?
