Hi Again,
I noticed that Ivy had a bit of a sore on her hind right leg on the inside of the bottom section of the leg. Didn't think too much of it as usually minor scratches/sores heal by themselves without being messed with. Anyway since then I have had early starts and home after dark, so been tending to the milking chores in the dark, well a little light coming in from the vehicle parked outside but essentially pretty dark so hadn't seen what it was doing. During this time I was just hosing it to keep manure etc off the sore.
This morning for the first time milking by daylight I could see that it was quite a lot worse, it had extended to double it's size and was quite mucky looking. Being Sunday and 1 hour from vets, and not essentially an emergency I hit the search function on here and google to see what I had in the cupboards to treat her with. Couldn't find a lot of info but enough to work with. I would have treated her with Iodine spray but when I pulled it out of the cupboard it had totally dried up from lack of use - next best option that I decided on was Hydrogen Peroxide which I syringed over the area to totally cover it. I washed and towel-dried the area first and discovered that there is one section that is like a deeper wound.
I have no idea how she originally injured it but it makes me wonder if she has 'stabbed' herself on some old wire/stick or something in the paddock. Prior to us getting this place someone has buried all the old fencing in holes in the ground, so some is starting to surface. Certainly wondering if it is some old rusty wire that has done it.
So I have washed, dried it and applied Hydrogen Peroxide to kill bacteria. Then in view of the fact that it could potentially have infection deeper in this one spot I have applied a Banana poultice tonight to draw out the infection and bandaged it up.
I have my mother calling through tomorrow and she is picking up some raw honey for me to use on Ivy. Not sure of the best way of using this tho. It is in a spot where she can reach some of the sore spot to lick it (approx half) and would, I assume, lick the honey straight off. Interestingly where she can reach to lick looks like it is starting to heal whereas where she can't reach the infection seems to be slowly creeping into the surrounding fur, presumably because of the muck that is being produced. I wondered about applying the honey and then bandaging? How often would I need to reapply and rebandage?
Any other ideas of what I should/shouldn't do?
As far her mastitis quarter the vets sent me out some dry treatment infusions - one to apply now (which I have done) to the affected quarter as we will not be milking it out and calf refuses to touch it, and then 4 more to treat all four quarters on drying up in about a month's time. We then have to wait until she freshens to know if it has worked, if not, then we will be taking the course of culturing and so on.
Cheers, and thanks again,
Nita
