Yesterday evening I went into the barn to feed my girls and discovered Brownie had a major neck wound.
Took the vet 30 minutes to arrive and while we waited Brownie ate all her dinner.
The vet said he was not going to sedate her so it was safe to feed her.
I did not see how this happened but the vet thinks that she was rubbing her head/neck against a post and jabbed herself on a wire. Once the wire poked her, she then jerked back ripping the wire out her skin. The wound and the theory do fit. Plus I discovered where my husband had used barbless barbed wire to attach a cattle panel up against some railroad ties, so the wire is pretty strong. He had bent the wires down but did not cut them off. Otherwise, we are at a loss on what caused this.
Here are the healing instructions that the vet gave me.
Give her 10cc of Excentel RTU EZ once a day, in the evening for 10 days. Rotate which side of neck to give the shot in (SubQ).
1. Flush the wound with water hose, spraying hard into the wound to remove dead skin. Said this would debris the wound and stimulate blood flow which would stimulate faster healing.
2. Then squirt the area with a warm salt water solution. Forgot to ask the ration. Wyomama suggested 1/2t to 1 cup of warm sterile water.
3. Then I squirt Granulex V into the deep hole, lifting the flap of skin on top.
4. Then I squirt Vetericyn VF Wound & Skin Care over the entire wound, liberally.
5. Cover wound with Aluminum Bandage. Especially coating the edges. Said this will keep them moist.
6. Then spray Endure Sweat-Resistant Fly Spray over the entire area to repel flies. This stuff really works.
7. Add vaseline down the side of her neck so what drains runs off, does not stick to her and won't burn her.
----- Do this 2 times a day for at least the first 5 days, then we will assess the situation ----
Since she was still eating, the vet opted to wait on giving her any pain medication. He said pain medication brings its own set of hazards and wanted to wait and see if she would need it. He said to call him if she stops eating or appears to be in major pain. I can tell this morning she was in discomfort, walking slower but still came in for breakfast. So as of now, she has not had any pain meds.
Here is a picture of her this morning before doing anything to her.
After she ate her breakfast, I got her into the chute and started cleaning her up.
I actually started on her brisket and worked my way up the neck.
She actually raised her neck to allow me to rub her under her chin while she got her bath.
The vet told me to expect some major swelling for at least 2-3 days, then he said it will start to go down.
So I was not too freaked out this morning to see it so puffy.
Here is a picture after we did our AM clean up and re-dressing the wound.
Giving me a kiss afterwards.
This afternoon.
Think Junior is enjoy his 24 hour milk bar?
Here it is after I had flushed it out and before putting anything on it.
Day 1 - pm cleaning
The vet told me to pull any loose skin off and basically pick every thing black off as I see it.
Sound right?
I am super impressed with the fly repellent - this stuff will be a standard in my barn.
