Tulip was due the 6th, and finally popped her heifer out in the wee hours of the morning today. I found her mostly dry at 4:30am, already nursed & trying to run & bounce around. I'm so excited about this one! Tulip is my second Rousseau daughter born here, and I bred her with sexed semen from Belle Fourche Clay, so I have been anxiously awaiting baby's arrival...for 9 months. I've even had a name picked out for most of that time.
There's a story to go with her & her name, if I may...
When my vet came out to do the AI, we were standing in front of the barn talking afterwards when there was a loud cracking noise. It took a couple seconds before it clicked in my brain - OH NO, that was the peach tree! Our early white peach tree was finally bearing it's first good crop & was loaded with just-ripening fruit, and sure enough, one of the big main branches have given way under the weight & torn a big chunk of trunk off with it.
We salvaged what we could & I made lots of different goodies...white peach preserves, peach butter, and since the red raspberries were producing at the same time I also tried a white peach & red raspberry jam. Wow, do those two flavors tickle the tongue! It was a beautiful rich red color & just amazing.
The next time the vet was out, he was glad to hear that Tulip had taken on the first try. It was the first time he had done any sexed semen for anybody, and was joking about being able to say he has 100% success rate. He also asked about the peach tree & if we'd been able to use the fruit. It was just a memorable day all around, I think.
So without further ado, I introduce NewHope Peachberry Jam. I've been calling her Jammie...yes, when talking to her through momma's belly.
None of my other red calves so far have been this deep, rich color at birth. They've all been born lighter.
And Tulip had to see what I was doing & photobombed us.
Getting some nummies.
And I just love the way they're positioned on this one, standing almost exactly the same way & peeking around each other's back end.
She's such a nice, stout girl. She's only about 23.5 inches tall & weighed in at 53#. I'm really pleased with the way she turned out. Can you tell I'm totally smitten? And I am blissfully, ecstatically, and superbly happy!!!
