they are getting worse so rapidly i dont know what to do. the cover the entire cleft area between her front quarters and it is spreading forward now to her milk vein/ belly skin. i am working so hard at keeping the area clean and dry, have used:
- tto/ gse, acv
- blu-kote
- neem
- peroxide
- lye soap scrubbing/ drying/ leaving open
- neosporin
i called the vet and he didnt seem concerned at all. he suggested betadine and bag balm. or, he said, i could give her a bunch of needle antibiotics. he said it could be a staph infection?
my internet research largely fruitless. 2 things sounded similar.
1) "Udder oedema
Sometimes the udder gets bigger than normal because fluid collects in the tissue. As the cow walks, the udder rubs against the inner thighs, causing reddening of these areas. Constant rubbing at these areas causes the skin to peel off, leaving raw lesions on the udder. "
and:
" Udder Sores ( Necrotic Dermatitis):
Moist, foul-smelling, necrotic lesions may be observed in areas of tightly adjacent skin of some animals. In heifers, the lateral aspect of the udder and medial aspect of the thigh are often involved. In this area, the udder is pressed tightly against the leg, resulting in chafing, dermatitis, and necrosis. Udder edema is a risk factor for the development of this condition and must be treated concurrently. The necrotic skin should be cleaned daily with an antiseptic solution and thoroughly dried. Mild astringents should be applied. In multiparous cows, a similar condition, which may be associated with mite infestation, is seen at the anterior portion of the udder between the 2 forequarters. The swollen, necrotic area may be treated topically with an approved miticide; however, appropriate milk withholding periods must be observed."
but there is no smell at all. not even a slight smell. the infection seems skin-deep, a result of the sores and not a cause of it, you know? the it is spreading, rapidly, makes me think the caused by mites one could be it. but would she have mites just there? when it spreads it starts out dry, just a rough rashy hardness to the skin, and then erupts as it gets worse. in the worst areas the skin/ hair is gone and there are just sores. also, if it were the mite thing, wouldnt the drenching with Neem have solved it?
please please help.
