Hey everyone!
Our new cow and her heifer calf, Rose and Daisy (whom you may have read about here familycow.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=cow&thread=61040 ) were delivered today! ;D
I got lots of videos which I will probably put together into a nice little showcase of her arriving and upload it to YouTube, but for now here are some photos. The first five compilations are stills from the videos so they are a little blurry and grainy.
Here they are just arriving (the seller in purple). Rose came out very calmly, she walks wonderfully on a lead. Daisy stalled for a bit and then came jumping out. They were very curious about the new area and took some time looking around. Daisy stuck close to her mother today, so that settles my worries about their bond
The two goats come out to see what's happening. Daisy spies them and a lot of staring ensues. Then Rose and Daisy wander up towards them and the poor timid goats have to flee XD
They first check everything in the near vicinity out. They are standing in front of the goat's shed and the round tank is a chicken house. They decide the lush weeds are pretty good.
Our four horses spot the new arrivals next. In the first picture you can see, from left to right: Nisbet, Artorius (full blood sister and brother) and their mother Titinia. The white pony is the sibling's grandmother, Moon.
Rose doesn't really care about the horses, as she's been around them in her previous home. The horses on the other hand think the cows are pretty weird and inspect them for ages. After a while Titinia and Moon calm down, although Arty still finds them curious.
Daisy settles in quickly and starts playing in her big new paddock. She runs at the horses, startling Artorius and the goose. Our alpaca, Kofi and Tangara, also join in the crew to watch the new arrivals.
Daisy is pretty content with all the room to frolic around in. When she is bigger she and her mama will get to roam out with the horses in a much larger paddock.
Some proper photos now. After plenty of rain, the grass is almost taller than Daisy. She has the sweetest little face!
Rose is very pleased with all the space and lush grass too. The nose band on her halter was a bit loose and floped on her nose when she ate; I've tightened it up now.
Last one - some snuggles
It's now night time. I went out to see Daisy and Rose just before dark. Daisy was having a long drink when I arrived, so I'm glad to see she's drinking well.
I gave Rose some snacks of cauliflower, kale, silverbeet and spinach leaves, which she gobbled up. She was very friendly and let my sister and I brush and pat her, although I haven't tried to touch her udder yet, and after a while she got bored and kept moving away. Her hooves also need trimming still.
But she is quite bossy and pushy around food, and she didn't want me to adjust her halter because I was interrupting her grazing, so she kept pulling her head away, both which I'll have to train out of her. Any tips for doing that? I read natural horsemanship works well on cows too, and I've had experience with that so I will be trying it out with both Rose and Daisy - Daisy is very shy and doesn't like us coming close, so she needs a lot of work.
Otherwise they are doing very well. I'm so excited to start testing out milking her, but first she needs to settle in and I need some milking supplies to arrive. Everything is very new to my family and I as these are our first cows! They are really lovely though and we are so pleased with our purchase. We are going to be changing their names once we think of good ones though, flower names for cows just aren't to our liking
Well, hopefully everything goes well and I will keep you updated as they continue to get settled in!
Thanks,
Tamara
