I posted this in the introductions, but thought I would try here to so that I could meet more of you and get advice/insight!
Hi,
My name is Shanna. I am a Christian, Homeschooling Mother of 8. We live out in the boonies in a small town in Alabama. I was raised on a farm all of my life until I married, moved away, and ventured in a more city-ish life. Now, many years and 8 kids later I am finally back in the country, nearer my roots and can't wait to raise my kids up closer to the way I was raised. We have 4 acres and my father in law purchased the 15 acres adjoining our property. It has been fenced and is almost ready to go. My FIL purchased 50 goats to finish clearing off the back lot and has 10 black angus heifers in various stages of pregnancy on the way this week. I am so excited, yet all I REALLY want is a Jersey milk cow. I was raised on jersey milk and can't wait to get my "Lucy."
I am a naturalist/hippie about everything for my family. We use only home remedies, no vaccines, no chemicals. We grow an organic garden every year, etc. I plan to raise our cow without antibiotics, modified foods/grains, etc.
Although I grew up on a farm until age 17, it has been many years and many things have been forgotten, plus I know that my grandfather did occasionally use antibiotics, which I hope to avoid.
I plan to find and buy a recently weaned jersey calf and raise to adulthood to be our family cow. I plan for all of the kids to pet, pamper, and play with her daily so that she becomes the sweet, docile, tolerant family cow as I remember having as a kid! My father in law is going to have one angus bull in his pasture in which I plan to breed her periodically to keep her with milk, and either selling or raising the calf for beef.
I am hoping that I can find a like-minded community here in which to ask questions and seek advice, since my grandfather has passed away. He was my go-to for all animal.farming information before.
If anyone knows of inexpensive places I can find a healthy jersey heifer calf in/near central Alabama it would be greatly appreciated. Advice on a very inexpensive shelter for her would be nice too. Ideas of how to keep her healthy without antibiotics, vaccines, modified foods, etc. She will have a large grass pasture along with hay that we already have stored.
Thank you all for reading my "novel."
