JanO's Jersey Rescue. ;D
Today I had a pretty Jersey girl brought to me that represents every reason I don't like commercial dairy's. (Well, lets just say most commercial dairy's, I know there are a lot that aren't like this one.) Anyway, Annabelle is a 5 (?) year old pure Jersey who is just a sweetheart. She has a great disposition and I can see that once she was a beauty, but now she's is grossly underweight, with an infected hoof crack that is going to require treatment, and a nasty case of mastitis that I'm not so sure I can cure without a vets help. But what really gets me, is that she was at this dairy for only 8 weeks! She went from a beautiful healthy girl, to this.
I milked out what I could tonight and I'm treating all 4 quarters for mastitis, but her left rear quarter is so hard I think she's going to need an insert. I also did a lot of massage and hot packs on her, but it didn't make much of a difference. She's just so tight on that side. I've also started her on good grass hay, grain and minerals. She wouldn't touch the alfalfa pellets I gave her though. Tomorrow she's going to get free grazing rights with Millie. There's a lot of tall grass for her to work on outside of the pasture, and I can keep a close eye on her in the yard as well. The fellow who came yesterday for Millie is going to be her tomorrow to see what can be done for Annabelle's foot. I hope he's able to do something with it to make her feel better.
So, as of now it looks like I have 4 cows in my care. Unfortunately the 2 that are in milk are the ones that are in the most need of attention.
