Our quest is for food independence. The family milk cow is an integral part of that, as it provides 3 of the 4 major food groups: Milk, Ice Cream and Cheese. If cows produced chocolate, I would need nothing else in this world.
OK, seriously, I want to talk about aquaponics for a minute. I see many folks here already have hoophouses or greenhouses, most garden and I would bet a lot of folks are freezing and canning stuff. But real "food independence" means zero inputs to the farm. THAT is what we have been trying to build toward. One of the amazing things we discovered is aquaponics. It is the blissful union of fish farming and hydroponics, and you can grow fresh "organic" food year round, including your protein. This video absolutely changed my life:

We are about to break this system down and move, and we will be putting in a much more complex system next, with worm beds and sprouting system integrated. We will even attempt to grow some grains through to seed, and if we can pull that off, we are nearly to our zero inputs, except...
Can anyone tell me how to grow a chocolate cow?
We raise blue tilapia, and they are quick growing, mild tasting, easy to breed, and they eat algae, so they LIKE their tank funky. (You put them in clear water for a few days before harvesting.)
Give a man a fish, he eats for a day.'
Teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.
Help a man put an aquaponics system in, and he will help end hunger.
