as many of you would know, I've been somewhat worried about Annie's calving, as we thought she may be pregnant to the same charolais as Dime was. having a close look at her udder & pins on the 30th, i thought i had a couple of weeks...
10am new year's morning there's a beeping in the driveway, and some friendly guy call out "hello the house - you have a calving in your front paddock!"
"@#$@$" says I, (thankfully not hungover, just tired from seeing the new year in) and leaps out of bed, throws on my clothes, hurriedly explain to the merry revellers now sleeping/stirring on my couch/floor/spare mattress that i'm off to the paddock to help Annie have her baby...
I gets to the paddock, and surely enough, she is onher side, calm & quiet. we have a bulging bag, with hooves within. Shaun (DH) says "she was up at the house 30 mins ago, noseying around, i chucked her some hay but she did not want it" - so that gave me a timeline, calf coming quick!!
i asked him for a rope, and used to to apply a gentle pressure... calving all said and done, with a huge audience (its a main rd, people were stopping to see, plus the 8 i had sleeping over lol!) and Stormageddon, Lord of ALL (Dr Who reference) was born.
the calving probably took maybe a half hour from where i came in. she licked him, and he was up and suckling withing a half hour. beautiful red baby boy, with eyes and ears that speak strongly of a bos. indicus bull rather than a charolais :-)
i think his father was a brahman, or (considering the quick, easy birth) a droughtmaster. one way or the other, he's a beefer!
