First off a great big THANK YOU JANENE!!!! for being there for me.
My heifer was due on Friday the 7th but decided to go today. She acted off this morning at 8 when I feed so I went back over at 11 to check her and she was in early labor. So I ran home got the camera and came back to wait. At 12:30 she passed the water bubble. I thought everything was going smooth but then she kept pushing and nothing. I know it takes heifers longer so at this point I'm not concerned other than the normal kind. She would get up and move then lay down again still nothing at about 3 I was getting really concerned. She looked like she wasn't trying as hard so I text Janene and ask her if I should go in for a feel or should I just wait longer. I didn't wait went in and I could feel the feet and head right there. I was in to my wrist. But it was TIGHT!!! I text Janene again asked if she thought I should help pull I thought the head or shoulders were stuck. She agreed that the heifer needed help. So I started pulling one leg to try to shift the shoulders, nothing so I did the other leg. A little movement. I got one leg a little ahead of the other and with every pull we made alittle progress. My DH showed up and asked if I needed any help. I said not yet as baby was moving ever so slowly. I was encouraging BB to push and she would I'd pull---HARD finally head and shoulders were out I thought he would just slide out then. Nope he still needed pulling all the way. His ribs and hips were as big as the shoulders. He was a big boy about 70lbs I think. I started to clean him and my heifer just lay there. She was exhausted. I gave her about 10 minutes but she wasn't getting up so I tapped on her and told her to get up and kept nudging her until she got to her feet then she just stood there. I left her alone for another 5 minutes but she needed to look after her baby and get some life back into her. She looked like she was giving up and was feeling sorry for herself. So I walked to her head and let her sniff my hand she licked it I walked a little backwards and she took a step and so it went until I got her all the way turned around and had her walk to the baby and she sniffed. Boy did that perk her up fast she started licking and still hasn't stopped.
I'd alway heard about cows laboring long enough that they just give up and I saw this in my heifer today. Thank goodness for me being home today and for Janene encouraging me to go ahead. I have lots of things to be thankfull for today.
