Please let me know if you have experienced this and what you used, how long it took to get a handle on it, and if you found anything to use before calving to try to discourage this to happen again.
It has taken me one whole month to figure this out, by the Grace of God, what's wrong with Elsie's udder.
About 7-10 days after calving, I smelled and started to notice a sore developing in the cleft of her udder. She had some edema and did not let down much. She tried to escape to a herd of cows that surround our place and I thought she might have gotten in some barbed wire. I started cleaning it at each milking and spraying some peroxide on it once a day.
Well, the sore started to heal pretty good. She was licking it and keeping it clean. Then one day, she licked that scab completely off and the flies just had a hayday with it. It seemed like it tripled in size overnite, so I started to put some Catron on it, for the flies, and continued to clean it and put peroxide on it everyday.
Yesterday it just looked horrible and I was thinking, could this be cowpox? But it just didn't look like it. I prayed about it and then ran across an older KFC thread started by Tabitha. IT'S A FUNGUS!!!V-8 moment here! Yes, it acts just like a fungus. Like one we women get and guys get. Fungus are always amoung us and when the conditions are right in and on our bodies they break out ! Now with all this said and read, I've started with: continue cleaning, but quit the peroxide and put on foot fungal cream and reading Tabitha's thread, many suggested Gentian Violet, which I will order tomorrow.
If any of you know about this fungus please share it with me.
TIA
