Hi,
(I modified the heading.. further developments... check latter posts)
Details first...
Suffok maiden ewe, lambed on Wednesday. Checked her on Thursday afternoon, lamb doing well, ewe had what looked to be like a very large, but even udder. Was walking well enough, eating and allowing lamb to nurse.
Checked on Friday, udder still huge, lamb doing well, but I noticed the ewe was not as chipper, and with a slightly hunched back.
Today, caught ewe, checked that no other lamb was stuck and no retained placenta, confident that neither is the case. Checked udder, one side giving good milk other side as large as a child size bowling ball. Hot, hard, tender. At first couldn't express anything, eventually expressed bloody fluid, no milk at all.
Brought the ewe and lamb home and have them in the horse float. Gave a longacting antibiotic intramuscularly, and infused with a dry cow intramammary infusion (not concerned about milk or meat with holding period as she's a breeder, and lamb will take about 9 months to grow out). Have massaged and milked as much as I could, without seeming to make a slight bit of difference, well maybe some softness at teat level, but still hard up the top and swollen.
Lamb is nursing on infected side well, when the ewe lies down and stops moving away from him. I know that the lamb is doing it good, however, I have to also keep moving her over to the "good" side to make sure she gets good milk, and not just bloody fluid to fill her belly.
I'll make up a mastitis rub tomorrow and massage it in. I've clipped the wool away from her belly and udder to make it easier to clean and for the lamb to find the teat.
I'll get some anti-inflammatories for her on Monday when the vet is open, and continue to massage and milk her over the next few days.
Seems to be a lot of edema and swelling.
Anything I'm missing??? Anybody know how quickly I should start to see a difference in her?
Bye for now,
Heidi
