Ok, I am considering a LGD. I never thought I would. I have had no desire to own a Livestock Guardian Dog but we are having a real problem with predators now. The fox especially have become a real problem and while my Corgi runs them off when he happens to be in the barnyard, he doesn't stay in the barnyard. He goes wherever I go and sleeps against the kitchen door on the deck when I am inside the house. The fox tease our dogs all night long and they, along with possums, skunks and birds of prey have killed about half of my hens! We have begun putting electric netting up and most of the birds stay within the netting but some are flying over the netting and continuing to free range. (I have always had free range birds for as long as I have owned chickens.) In spite of the electric netting around the chicken house, two more hens were killed last week when I asked a neighbor boy to shut up the chickens and he didn't get them all inside before shutting the door. Whatever got them that night got through the electric netting and killed them, but when they tried to drag the body, couldn't get it through or under the electric netting and left it there.
Anyway, I have the link to Bountiful Farm that Jenn had posted on another thread and will look at that when I am able. I also signed up for the Yahoo group. I am interested in possibly adopting/buying a working dog that is older and knows the ropes. If anyone in Virginia or within a reasonable driving distance knows of a dog that might fit my needs, please let me know.
My biggest concern is that the dog has to do well with my other dogs. I won't bring in a dog that is going to be a threat to my Doxies and Corgi.
Any advice info you want to share would be much appreciated.
